Chapter Thirteen

Easton

Wakefulness rolled sweetly over Easton, with the memory of Quinley’s lips on his and the feel of her in his arms. So perfect, so right.

It had been years since Easton had shared that kind of kiss with a woman. And no kiss had come close to what he felt the moment their mouths connected. It was almost as though something had been stretching, a tension growing in him, and in that moment, like a rubber band, it snapped back into the place it should have always been.

She felt like his.

That startling thought, and the sound of shouts and hammers yanked Easton right into the present. Out of dreams and back into real life, where the emu farm had become a construction zone, and where he needed to be much more cautious with wild, romantic thoughts. These kinds of thoughts would probably scare Quinley completely.

Honestly, they scared him. But it was a strange fear, one laced with excitement, hope, and the desire to embrace it all.

Easton showered, but he swore he could still smell Quinley on his skin, that fresh scent like spring. He was glad for the good memories when he walked downstairs into the mess of construction.

Already, he could hear the sound of the mini backhoe that was working to level the driveway before paving. Stepping over a pile of two-by-fours to get to the coffee maker, Easton grumbled under his breath. The work may have begun a few weeks late, but the crews had no problem starting early if Saturday and today were any indication. At least they’d taken yesterday off. Some crews worked Sundays too.

As he measured out coffee, Easton could see Neph and Casey Jones galloping through the field, tossing their heads with ears flattened against their heads. The emus were huddled against the back fence, almost out of sight.

When he had agreed to oversee the work on Cilla and Pax’s house, Easton hadn’t realized exactly how disruptive this would be. To him or to the animals. The work he and Elton had done at the farm before Pax and Cilla’s wedding had been less extensive and the property larger, which kept the horses away from most of the noise. That was impossible here, especially as they worked on paving next to the house and barn.

The crews were like insects, scurrying all over the house and outside, underfoot and causing a constant buzz. They left their tools and materials everywhere and played loud music throughout the day. Easton’s brain rattled from the noise and the presence of so many people. Especially one particular person who had been completely irritating him.

Thankfully, Easton didn’t see Chris as he grabbed his travel mug, nodded to a few workers, and made a beeline for his workshop. He couldn’t pinpoint why, but the contractor rubbed him the wrong way, ever since the moment he had spilled coffee all over the front porch. Chris seemed oddly eager for Easton’s approval, despite the fact that it wasn’t even Easton’s house.

But Chris kept seeking him out, like he wanted or needed to be micromanaged every step of the way.
